LABORATORIES

IRSN DOSIMETRIE has two laboratories to assist you with the dosimetric tracking of your workers :

  • The external dosimetry laboratory
  • The in vivo measurement and biological dosimetry laboratory

The laboratories apply a range of measurement techniques to support employers in the effective tracking of workers potentially exposed to ionizing radiation.

The laboratories are based at IRSN's Le Vésinet site, in the Yvelines department (78).

1. EXTERNAL DOSIMETRY LABORATORY

Benefiting from the very latest technological innovations both in terms of its dosimeters and its operating chain, IRSN's external dosimetry laboratory has a unique analysis capacity in Europe, enabling it to analyse more than 10,000 passive dosimeters a day.

The high performance of the RPL (Radio Photo Luminescence) technology chosen by the laboratory is recognized both in France and internationally.

IRSN passive dosimeters are used to track workers' external exposure. After delayed reading, they are sent to occupational health doctors and radiation protection advisors in charge of tracking.

2. IN VIVO MEASUREMENT AND BIOLOGICAL DOSIMETRY LABORATORY

IN VIVO MEASUREMENT

IRSN has fixed and mobile in vivo measurement facilities to measure the activity of X-ray and gamma radiation directly emitted in case of internal radiological contamination by ingestion, inhalation or skin penetration (wounds). This is a direct and fast measurement using Germanium or sodium iodide detectors.

In vivo measurement analyses are used to track the internal dosimetry of workers. This method can only be used to measure elements emitting X-rays or gamma rays.

RADIOTOXICOLOGICAL MEASUREMENT

The radiotoxicological medical analysis laboratory uses equipment and methods to measure radioactive elements excreted by the body (stool - urine).

Urine samples prepared for radiotoxicological analysis

Radiotoxicological analyses are used to track the internal exposure of workers. They detect Alpha, Beta and Gamma emitting radionuclides.

We remain at your disposal to answer any requests for advice or specific services in the fields of monitoring workers' exposure to ionizing radiation, dosimetry and radiation protection (dosimetre@irsn.fr).
